What makes a thought worth thinking?
Yesterday we highlighted the fact that to consider ourselves in control of our own minds, thinking needs to be something that we can choose to do or not do. Today we're adding the first of a few filters to help us answer the above question:"Is this thought necessary?"
Many of our thoughts will be necessary! Our jobs, lives, cultures and senses of self are all made of thoughts. But, it's also true that there is an enormous opportunity cost to constant thinking. You will never think yourself into lasting happiness and wellbeing, or out of your anxiety, overwhelm or confusion. To address these deeper issues, you must look deeper into your mind, and your incessant and out-of-control thinking monkey only blocks that.
Before diving into a train of thought, pause for a moment and ask yourself if it's really necessary. What would be the cost to not thinking about this?
